XRef in 3D Max

So XRef!!! Never really been a big fan of referencing stuff from one file to another. Maybe I have been scared by the dodginess that is Maya’s reference system. Oooi that brings up bad memories. Moving on promptly…

I have been considering the potential uses, especially during the past week of optimisation hell. The problem being that I have been using the ’save selected’ option… then in a separate file exporting the saved out mesh.

I can now make major changes in my Master Scene File, and they get propagated down the chain into all my export files… here’s what is important to me!

  • Mesh Modifiers – Auto Updates!! Collapsing the Mesh is fine too!!
  • UV Mapping – Auto Updates!!
  • Material Properties – Appear to not auto load into the XRef’d scene, which is fine because it keeps the new scene much lighter & smaller. The negative of that is that I may make material changes in the master file. A small price to pay I think… plus if you are careful & setup your material properly first… no problems.

Obviously I have an incremental save file, and then have a separate file which is named xxxxx_XRef_File.max, this allows me to work incrementally, but still XRef everything from the same Master Max file..

So far it is working like a legend, and saving me so much time!!!
