Technical Artist

Its a term thats popped up pretty recently in GameDev, and the position is becoming more and more important. In my opinion it is an Artist with a medium to large base of knowledge in the technical & programming aspects of his Art Tool and his Game Engine. Some might say he is more Programmer than Artist. But who ever he/she is, they are the go between for the Artist and the Programmers, developing Art Pipeline Tools, Optimizing Content for Performance reasons, and providing tech support for the regular artists.

My roll is daily, becoming more and more a Technical Artist, however I spend my time with the current Art Pipeline and making sure its functional… beyond that though, I have taken it upon myself to advance my programming knowledge, starting with Max script!

With that said, I’m working in collaboration with one of our programmers to further my understanding of MaxScript but looking at it from a more Artistic viewpoint. I’m an artist and I need to be rewarded visually for some code that I just wrote… it could be a GUI, or some fancy new automated object creation system.

Anyway… we’re starting simple and planning to keep it simple. We’ll be posting all the stuff & tutorials at FuzzYspo0N’s Blog

C :D

    Hey Mantas!
Yeah, its not something crazy new, but it has become a position that needs a specific person.

A TD is more an overall position, which is very open to interpretation..
    See – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_director

Otherwise a Tech Artist acts as a bridge between the artists and programmers working on a game. They must be well versed on the technical aspects, but they are official part of the Art Team!!

cool, thanks, i didn’t know that. very interesting.i guess my knowledge is more from film or animation industry, and i am sure in game industry technology touches everyone (every artist) much stronger then in film (cos of game engine limitations or lets just say specificity) anyway very interesting, thanks for this post.
