So finally getting around to making a post regarding the results of the Animation Survey!

So anyway, after 44 responses to the survey! I submit the results for your reading pleasure!! I have only shown the highest two results in most cases! :)

  1. Freelance or Full Time Employee? – 62% are full time employee’s
  2. How long is your average working day?! – 8-10hrs = 50% and 10-14hrs = 31%
  3. How often do you work weekends or public holidays?! – Occasionally = 50% and, All the time = 27%
  4. Do you work by choice, or because your production schedule?! – By Choice = 62% and, By Production Schedule = 37%
  5. Do you get paid for overtime work?! – No = 61% and, Only if it was Scheduled Work = 16%
  6. Do you receive meals at work?! = No = 46% and, Only during a big deadline = 26%

So there you have it… interesting the results actually… summed up in  a single sentence… ‘lots of people working pretty long hours, by choice and not getting paid for it!’

  2. This is why so many people in this industry leave SA. The working conditions are disgusting. Constantly working weekends without pay? Sorry, but no-one, unless they don’t know any better, does that “by choice”.

I left SA five years ago and now work abroad. The working conditions are a million times better here, and so is the pay. SA’s industry needs to start treating its employees better, because they’re going to keep losing people when those artists eventually realise just how shockingly bad the situation in SA actually is.

  3. Hey! Thanks so much for the comment! Its interesting your comment came at the time it did. I have been for a long time saying that I would not leave SA, because we keep loosing so many to the rest of the world!

However considering my entire year has predominantly been spent working late nights and all weekend without pay… I have honestly begun considering the idea of working overseas! The sad part is I love SA, but just wish the SA Animation Industry would get its act together!

Its a real shame that it is the way it is!!
